TCC Media Release: TCC joins debate over Tralee (14 December 2009)
The Tuggeranong Community Council Inc has weighed into the debate over the proposed Tralee residential development.
Tuggeranong Community Council President, Darryl Johnston, said the Council is concerned that the initial construction of 1500 new homes directly under the flight path of Canberra Airport will lead to aircraft being redirected over Tuggeranong.
“Tralee has the potential for 5-thousand new homes. I am concerned that despite the fact most new residents will purchased or built their homes aware they will be living under a flight path they will complain about aircraft noise and they will eventually succeed in having the flight paths moved over Tuggeranong,” Mr Johnston warned.
“Currently Tuggeranong residents are protected from aircraft noise by noise abatement areas, effectively no fly zones for jets. Aircraft taking off and landing to the south of Canberra Airport are channelled into a narrow corridor between Tuggeranong and Queanbeyan. This is unique for a major city and means that aircraft are flying over rural areas and not densely populated suburbs.”
“The Commonwealth Government, AirServices Australia and Qantas have all made it clear that Tralee is an unacceptable location for housing. They have all warned that the new residents will complain and this will lead to noise sharing, meaning flight paths will be relocated over Tuggeranong.”
“The Council is also concerned that the proposed Tralee residential development will lead to a significant increase in peak hour traffic on the Monaro Highway. The Highway is the main eastern heavy vehicle bypass for Canberra and commuter route for Tuggeranong residents. It is already straining under traffic congestion and thousands more cars will only add to the chaos.”
“The Council believes there is other land in the region that can be developed over the next 30-years that will double the population of Queanbeyan/Canberra without the need to build one house under a flight path,” Mr Johnston said.
The Tuggeranong Community Council will lodge a submission to the Draft Environmental Plan for the proposed Tralee development with the Queanbeyan City Council. The Plan is open for public comment and submissions close on Tuesday 22 December.
Individual submissions can be lodged by email to: council@qcc.nsw.gov.au under the heading of Tralee (addressed to the Mayor or the General Manager) – or by mailing them at PO Box 90 Queanbeyan NSW 2620.
Copies of the plan can download from the Queanbeyan City Council’s Website at website www.qcc.nsw.gov.au.
