Little or no landfill needed in the future! No such thing as waste but materials that can be recycled and actually bring income into the ACT economy!  Wouldn’t that be great!  Members of the Tuggeranong Community Council (TCC) have attended meetings of the new ACT Waste Feasibility Study, which aims at giving options to government on how to handle all waste generated or processed within the ACT over the next 10-50 years. The objective is to maximise recycling and reusing while minimising landfilling. This can’t come to soon for the people of Fadden who are currently suffering from recurring smells from the Mugga tip – a concern that needs to be looked into.

Other issues that have come up for discussion at the TCC includes: Public Housing at Greenway, where the local community will be consulting with the Public Housing people over January, and, the need to ensure we are bush fire aware and have a Bush Fire Survival Plan as we come up to the bush fire season.

Events in Tuggeranong over the last month include: The reopening of the Tuggeranong Leisure Centre including its new water park; the Tuggeranong Festival, which had over 2000 more people attending compared to the previous year; community erosion control and revegetation activities on the  edge of Lake Tuggeranong; and attending with many others, the annual Christmas Carols at Tuggeranong Homestead.

Issues bought to the TCC’s attention include:

  • Forum on the drug ICE Forum organised by Senator Seselja. It was quite confronting to hear how easily people can be addicted to this drug and how violent if makes them.
  • Concerns over the National Broadband not coming to many areas in Tuggeranong

We are currently looking at suitable guest speaks for the coming year.  Suggestions so far have included people talking about the National Broadband Network (NBN); getting an update about the new CIT coming to Tuggeranong next year; finding out about COTA, the Council of the Ageing; and, having students from Lake Tuggeranong talking to us at the April meeting.  If you have any other ideas please let us know.

Meanwhile Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you from the Tuggeranong Community Council
